Hub vs. Belt Motors for Electric Skateboards: Which to Choose?

Electric skateboards are distinct from their traditional counterparts, largely due to the motor systems they employ. This article delves into the differences between Hub and Belt motors to aid your buying decision.

Basics of Drive Systems:Hub Motors:

Here, all the motor components are housed inside the wheel. When the accelerator is pressed, both the motor and wheel turn simultaneously, maintaining a 1:1 spin ratio.

Basics of Drive Systems:

Belt Motors:

These motors are external. There are pulleys on both the motor and the wheels, connected by a belt. When powered, the motor turns, driving the belt and subsequently spinning the wheel in a continuous cycle.

Key Differences:

  1. Efficiency: Hub motors shine in this area. With their 1:1 spin ratio, they ensure the skateboard operates smoothly. They also emulate the feel of traditional skateboards due to less torque and friction, resulting in extended battery life.

  2. Sound: Belt motors tend to be noisier as both the motor and belts are external. This added noise can act as an alert to pedestrians, and some even find it appealing.

  3. Maintenance: Belt-driven boards need more upkeep. The exposed parts make them vulnerable to environmental elements, requiring regular attention to belt tension and cleaning to avoid damage.

  4. Braking: Belt motors provide instant braking, which can potentially throw off unprepared riders. Hub motors, on the other hand, offer a gentler brake mechanism. Plus, they can recycle energy back into the batteries during braking.

  5. Wheel Considerations: Hub boards usually have smaller wheels due to internal motor parts. In contrast, belt-driven boards provide more flexibility in changing wheels.

  6. Hill Climbing: Belt-driven skateboards outperform hub motor boards in uphill situations, thanks to their geared system.

  7. Speed: Hub-driven boards, with their reduced torque, often achieve higher top speeds.
